The Captive or the Caged?

Can you have really good food photography without sticking everything with pins and polishing it with nail varnish? I think you can, what do others think?

You can have very good still life photography with great use of lighting alone.... but some props and a bit of styling surely add to it

yes, but, and call me a dirty designer if you will, you cannot have great food photogrpahy without great crockery and settings....

You can, but I personally think photos of food look better with some styling. I mean, when you get down to it... food styling can be as simple as just spritzing water on tomatoes to make them look fresher.
